The Dayton Society of Artists' Introducing... Visual Art Workshops are dedicated to fostering creativity, innovation, and artistic growth within our community by providing hands-on learning experiences and expert instruction in new and diverse art mediums. 


The Dayton Society of Artists’ Professional Development Program aims to cultivate a supportive environment where artists can enhance their skills, expand their professional networks, and thrive in their creative endeavors.

    Join the Dayton Society of Artists for an in-depth, hands-on workshop exploring the art and science of preparing artwork for presentation.

    This session will cover a range of media and surfaces, focusing on how proper preparation ensures safe transport, handling, and display while preserving the longevity and integrity of the work. Through a mix of discussion and demonstration, we’ll explore:

    -Matting, mounting, and framing techniques

    -Frame design and selection

    -Media-specific considerations and problem-solving

    -Practical tips for damage prevention and preservation

    Attendees are encouraged to bring their own artwork and questions for personalized guidance. Whether you’re a professional artist or just beginning to exhibit your work, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and techniques to present your art safely, effectively, and beautifully.

    About Dave Crowell

    Dave Crowell is the owner of Custom Frame Services, Inc. He began working in the fine art industry as a frame maker in 1987 after receiving an Associate of Arts (Fine Art - Painter) from Sinclair Community College. He earned his certification with the Professional Picture Framers Association in 1990 and has also earned certificates for frame restoration from The Inter-Museum Laboratories in Oberlin, Ohio and Reed’s Gold Leaf in Nashville, Tennessee, along with many other related training exercises. He has pursued the care and treatment of fine art as a passion and profession, establishing Custom Frame Services in 1993. The sharing of this experience is a privilege that he enjoys.

Using simple materials like magazine clippings, paper, and glue, you’ll learn to trust your instincts and create unique collages without overthinking. Perfect for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this session encourages playfulness, spontaneity, and personal storytelling through mixed media. No rules—just inspiration! All materials are provided, however, you are welcome to bring your own magazines, books, or other paper materials.

    CameraWorks: Photography Lessons with Hitch from Storm Falcon Studios 
    Whether you're just getting started or want to level up your portrait game, this is your jam. Bring your camera or just your camera phone, and get ready to shoot great people pictures.

    Flash Without Fear (Beginner Bootcamp)
    Tired of the “deer in headlights” look? This workshop gets you hands-on with flash the right way. We’ll practice bounce techniques, outdoor fill, drag shutter portraits, and one-light headshots. You’ll leave with real images on your card and the confidence to use flash without fear.

    About: Join us in attending the opening reception of Shirley Tucker: Through Their Eyes !

    Shirley Tucker is a Dayton-based artist who specializes in graphic design, acrylic oil painting and murals. She has an Associate of Arts degree from Rio Grande College, studied graphic design at Bowling Green State University, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University in 1989. 

    As an artist and longtime (now retired) officer of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court Probation Services, Tucker continues to create artwork alongside young people enmeshed in the system.

    She was honored for her work with an Ohio Senate Citation from Sen. Stephen A. Huffman on behalf of the Ohio State Senate, and special recognition on her work being shown at the Ohio Diaspora: Artwork from the Collection of the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center and Ohio Artists, sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. Tucker was also featured in both Dayton Weekly and the Dayton Daily News. Tucker received a proclamation from the Miami Township Board of Trustees for the Canvas Mural Project at the Dayton Mall, and was appointed to the Ohio Arts Council's (OAC) Teach Arts Ohio Residencies for PK-12 students in Ohio Schools, serving two terms, 2022–2023 & 2023–2024.


    Details: DSA will not be providing any transportation, however, feel free to carpool with a fellow artist to see the exhibition! We will be meeting in the lobby.

    Pencil and Prompts: Drawing Basics

    Sharpen up your sketching skills with a local artist providing you insights and inspirations into the world of drawing. Basic drawing materials provided. Guests are welcome to bring their own graphite drawing materials if desired. No drawing experience necessary. Each session provides insights on a different theme or drawing technique. Experimentation is strongly encouraged.

An active member of the local artist community, Matthew’s work explores movement, form, and expression through kinetic sculptures, jewelry, and paintings. Matthew continuously collaborates with organizations such as Culture Works to engage the community through his artistic process. He is a proud member of the Front Street artist community, where he creates, exhibits, and sells his work from his studio (#3345) on the third floor of Building 100’s BC entrance.

    Sketcher Social Session: Advanced Drawing

    Join in the fun with fellow sketching enthusiasts for an in-depth experience with drawing. Each session provides basic graphite materials and bringing your own advanced dry mediums (charcoal, chalk, colored pencil, etc.) is encouraged. Each session also includes a time for friendly drawing critique and discussion moderated by a local artist of any work made during the session or of a recent drawing that you would like feedback on. Experimentation and imaginative exploration of topics discussed is strongly encouraged! Each month has a different theme and guests are encouraged to collaborate on future themes as desired.

    Forget the triangle. In this workshop, you’ll rotate through shooting stations to master ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Moving subjects, depth of field drills, and low-light exercises will bring the “Exposure Well” to life so you can see how light really works.
