    Brian Mathus: Being Seen

Exhibit on Display Friday, January 2 - Saturday, January 31, 2026
Main Library, The 2nd Floor Gallery

    About the Exhibit and Artist:

Mathus paints with “emotional clarity” on canvas, wood, and paper. He uses graphite and Conte crayon to “draw interwoven relationships between meaning with composition and color,” according to his artist statement.

“Using acrylic and oil paint, I create an atmosphere that shapes meaning through composition and color,” said Mathus. He builds metaphors layer by layer until a piece reaches the ecstatic and the sublime, integrating Fauvism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and African art into his unique language.

Dayton has a deeper art history than most people realize, and it didn’t happen by accident. On the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM, join DSA Historian Kathleen Caffrey for a grounded, story-driven look at the artists, institutions, cultural shifts, and pivotal moments that shaped the city’s creative identity.

This isn’t a lecture full of dates to memorize. It’s context. How things started, why they mattered, and how the past still echoes through Dayton’s galleries, studios, and streets still today.

Come listen and connect with people who care about where our art scene has been and where it’s headed.
