Marilyn Hughey Phillis was born in Kent, Ohio, and received her early art training under Alma S. Gardner.  A strong interest in both art and science necessitated a major decision concerning professional training.  She chose to continue her art at The Ohio State University.  She worked as an analytical chemist at Battelle Memorial Institute.
 
Further art training was received at the Toledo Museum of Art School and under various private teachers and courses in the Cleveland area.  Fred Leach, AWS, has been her major watercolor instructor.
