Dayton Society of Artists Book Club: The Street of Wonderful Possibilities

Thursday, November 19, 2026

6:00–8:00 PM

Dayton Society of Artists

48 High Street, Dayton, OH 45403

Join the Dayton Society of Artists Book Club for a conversation about The Street of Wonderful Possibilities: Whistler, Wilde & Sargent in Tite Street by art historian Devon Cox.

Quiet and unassuming at first glance, Tite Street in Chelsea, West London, became one of the most influential streets in the cultural life of London during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its residents included some of the era’s most notable artists, writers, and cultural figures, including Oscar Wilde, John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, and Radclyffe Hall.

Through the lives of the people who lived and worked there, Cox explores Tite Street as a center of artistic experimentation, intellectual exchange, rivalry, and social change. Its history intersects with the Aesthetic Movement, women’s suffrage, the transformation of Victorian society, and the rapidly modernizing London of the fin de siècle.

The Street of Wonderful Possibilities brings together art, literature, social history, and the fascinating personal connections among the artists and intellectuals who made this small London street an extraordinary center of creative life.

The discussion will be led by Kathleen Caffrey, Dayton Society of Artists Board Member and Historian, who will guide the group through a conversation about the artists and writers of Tite Street, their relationships and rivalries, and the cultural world of late Victorian London.

No need to read the book in advance. Whether you have finished the book, just started it, or simply want to join a conversation about art, artists, and cultural history, everyone is welcome.

Free and open to the public.
