project space: layer cake by kATIE CLARK GABBARD

Layer Cake revolves around vivid, splashy acrylic paintings. The exhibit works to symbolize the unseen differences in culture, stories, political viewpoints, and mercies. The artwork furthers this idea of layers by attaching canvas assemblages, in a variety of vivacious shapes, colors, and patterns, to the original stretched painting. The assemblages explore beyond the borders of the original stretcher bars and are secured with specially-created modern "pucks" that lend to the light-hearted aesthetic of the paintings. The overall result is a collection of work that is energetic, engaging, interesting, and uplifting.
