    April 27: Putting Yourself on Paper: Resumes and Headshots

    Customize a sample resume or bring a current resume ready for constructive feedback! In this workshop, you will learn resume “dos and don’ts” and ways to update materials for the 21st century job market and then follow with a review of each other’s resumes. While participants are working on resume review, individuals will have the opportunity to get their headshot taken. These images will be emailed to participants for use in their own professional development.

    Required: Laptop with word processing software.* A current resume and/or list of accomplishments and materials related to your art career.  Please dress in a business casual look as you’d like to appear in your headshot. 

      
    May 18: Images & Art: Documenting Your Work

    Join us for a workshop on how to document your artwork. Local photographer, Francis Schanberger, will first show participants how to properly document one’s work using a quality camera and the DSA’s Art Tool Library lights. In contrast, individuals will also learn how to use a camera phone and resources accessible to them while taking pictures of their work. After the images are taken, Francis, will demonstrate how to use photo editing software to make your photographs stand out.

    Suggested: Please bring 1 original piece of artwork with you, 2-d and 3-d media are both welcome, and a camera and/or camera phone.

       

    June 22: Art in Words: Writing About Your Artistic Self
    Instructor: Erin L Shapiro
    Location: Dayton Society of Artists: 48 High Street, Dayton

    The DSA’s writing workshop will focus on the written materials an artist needs in order to excel in the art world. Participants will gain a basic understanding of writing artist statements, descriptions for individual pieces of art, narratives for grant writing, and how to use these materials when proposing an exhibition. We’ll then use this knowledge to critique examples of strong and weak written materials before examining our own samples.

    Required: Participants should bring a pen, pencil, and a notepad, along with a sample of writing about their art and/or themselves if they have it.


    July 20: Grant Writing Workshop: "Dispelling Myths and Understanding the Process" & Residency Q/A

    Location: Dayton Society of Artists: 48 High Street, Dayton

    Learn about grant writing and residencies with this combination workshop at the DSA. To begin, our instructor will explain how to become ready to apply to Ohio Arts Council grants and how to stand out among the competition. In addition, Teri Schoch will disperse myths around grants. Following the grant information session, a panel of local artists will answer questions regarding their own personal experiences regarding residencies.

    12:30-2:00 will be about Grants
    15 minute break
    2:15-3:30 will be the Residency Panel

    Required: Participants need only a pen and paper for this session.


    August 17: Portfolio Building 101

    In our last workshop of the series, we will demonstrate different ways to create a portfolio. Digitally, participants will learn how to create a website to display their artwork through a free website builder. Individuals will receive an 8.5 x 11 professional portfolio binder to physically display the materials created throughout each of the workshops.

    Required: Laptop with wifi access (Can borrow from library—please see below).*
    Suggested: Bring all final documents from previous workshops to add to physical portfolio. If needed, participants can print materials at the library for an additional charge.

    Join the DSA at Eastwood MetroPark to paint/draw the park. We'll meet in the parking lot just off of Springfield Street and will then choose our personal spots. We'll re-convene at 11:45 for a quick look at each other's work. Bring your own supplies.

    We'll be participating in St. Anne's PorchFest. Join us for great music and fun!

    Taking place in the historic St. Anne's Hill Historic District - Dayton, Ohio neighborhood, just east of downtown, Dayton Porchfest celebrates our rich and diverse music scene, with musicians and bands covering funk and blues to indie rock and jazz, classical and country, to bluegrass and old-timey that has deep Appalachian roots here. We also celebrate the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our "Welcome Dayton" spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade. And it all takes place in a family-friend environment in the St. Anne's Hill Historic District, just east of downtown.

    Dayton Porchfest is organized by The Collaboratory, a non-profit incubator for community enterprises and initiatives, located in Talbott Tower. Proceeds from Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory.
